Overview
Breaking Bal, episode 2, was a swing and blues weekend in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Santa Fe Swing Dance Society (SFSDS) was excited to welcome visiting instructors Desiree Roffers from Chicago, IL and Dominic Hanna from Raleigh, NC. There were workshop lessons, live music, and social dance parties for Balboa, Blues, and Lindy Hop dancers.

SATURDAY

[10:15AM] Hip Hop, all-levels, Tina Anderson – Electro Hip Pop Swing
This choreography based hip-hop class will start out with a warm-up including isolations, grooves, light stretching and finish with a swing inspired piece of choreography.
[11:30 AM] African Dance, all-levels, Naja Druva – Yankadi (It Is Good Here)
Get connected to the rhythmic roots of swing and other Black vernacular dance forms with this intro to West African Dance class! The class will be a rapid journey through rhythms tracing the path Rumba takes from its African origins to the US.

[10:15 AM] Balboa 1, all-levels, Josh & Emma – “Jack, I’m Mellow”
We’ll ease into Balboa with a focus on shuffles, steps, and shared intentions, using texture in our basic footwork, and finding comfort and ease in partner connection.
[11:30 AM] Balboa 2, all-levels, Josh & Emma – Lover Come Back to Me
In this hour, we’ll open up from close embrace and move into lollies and toss outs, exploring fluid connection, practicing inward intention, leveraging the twist, and letting momentum be our guide!
[1:30 PM] Charleston, all-levels,Bandi & Silke – Fascinating Rhythm
We’ll play with fun and energetic rhythmic footwork patterns that work great for fast music and varying points of partner connection.
[2:45 PM] Switch, all-levels, Silke & Wyllow – Pass the Bounce
In this class, we’ll work on smooth and seamless switching between the lead and follow roles in Lindy Hop.
[1:30 PM] Balboa 3, intermediate Desiree & Dominic – One O’Clock Jump
Let’s open up from Pure Bal into Bal-Swing Fundamentals! We’ll develop solid and flowy outs n’ ins and learn how to shape them in different ways.
[2:45 PM] Balboa 4, intermediate/advanced, Desiree & Dominic – I’m Livin’ in a Great Big (S)Way
Add some sauce to your Balboa with sways! We’ll work on fine-tuning subtle communication through partner connection and playing with full-body motion using this classic and versatile move.
[4:00 PM] Tango Fusion: Elli & Mike – Are You Down?
Mike & Elli are passionate both about Swing Dance and Argentine Tango, and enjoy mixing the two to create a smooth, creative expression done to slower styles of music. You’re invited to learn some foundational movements of both dances and to mix them together in new ways.
[4:00 PM] Balboa 5, advanced Dominic & Emma – Spreadin’ Rhythm Around
In this class, we’ll spend some time playing with musicality and add some fun turns to our Balboa vocabulary!
[7:15 PM] Swing Lesson, all-levels, Mike & Elli – Smooth Sailin’
This intermediate-level lesson prior to the dance will be centered on lindy hop with six and eight count steps. The instructors believe in teaching and practicing partner dancing in a way that is fun, gentle, clear and respectful.

Fine-tune your partner connection and technique for swing-outs that feel smooth, stable, and balanced every time.

[10:15 AM] Slow Bal 1, all-levels, Galen & Ross – Memories of You
Slow Balboa is a general term used for dancing in styles inspired by the original Balboa swing dancers from California who liked to dance to slow music. This class will introduce the foundations of connection, steps, and rhythms for comfortable and musical dancing.
[11:30 AM] Lindy 2, all-levels, Dominic & Desiree – T’aint what you do (It’s the way that you do it)
Add momentum, intention, and style to your Lindy Hop fundamentals!
[11:30 AM] Slow Bal 2, all-levels, Galen & Ross – Stardust
Modern Slow Balboa is heavily influenced by three specific historic dancers. In this class we will focus on two of those dancers, Dean and Nancy Raftery. We’ll explore their Slow Balboa steps and the characteristic ‘swim’ across the floor.
[1:30 PM] Lindy 3, intermediate, Bandi & Silke – Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Partner?
Learn how to spice up your swing-outs with variations that won’t break your connection to your partner or the music.
[1:30 PM] Blues 1, all-levels, Dominic & Desiree – Walk a Mile in My Shoes
We’ll cover some Ballroomin’ basics in this hour, with travelling quick steps and slow steps in both close embrace and an open promenade connection.
[2:45 PM] Lindy 4: Bandi & Silke – Posin’
Sometimes, doing nothing is actually doing everything. Learn how to execute a stop & pose effectively, and how to convince your partner to come along for the ride!
[2:45 PM] Blues 2, intermediate, Dominic & Desiree – Every Day I Have the Blues
Add turns and stylistic variations to Ballroomin’ fundamentals!
[4:00 PM] Soul Lindy: Josh & Emma – Get in the Groove & Let the Good Times Roll
How to apply your Lindy Hop Fundamentals to music where the triples aren’t swung! We’ll work with groovy triples and soulful swivels, learn some alternative shapes for our 6-count basics, play with musicality in 8-count rhythmic patterns.
[4:00 PM] Blues 3, advanced, Desiree & Ross – Blue and Sentimental
In this class, we’ll focus on Breaking Balboa fundamentals with Blues aesthetic stylings, taking familiar Balboa steps and movements and applying them in a different musical context.

[6:30 PM] 6-count Play, Floorcraft & Musicality, all-levels, Mike & Elli – King of the Road
Delve into Lindy Hop six-count figures to wrap up our weekend of dance. Use these floorcraft and musicality tools to improve your and your dance partner’s experience together!

Burque Jazz Bandits

Based out of Albuquerque, NM, the Burque Jazz Bandits bring fun danceable music inspired by 1920s-40s swing jazz, with toe-tapping rhythms, sizzling instrumentals, and passionate vocals. Formed in the local swing dance community, their shared love of jazz brought the Bandits together. The band has three core members and lots of musician friends. Robby Beasley arranges this 14-piece big band that swings Count Basie style.

If you registered for Breaking Bal 2025 but cannot attend, we offer the following options:
- You may transfer your registration to another person at no cost for Breaking Bal 2025. The last day to transfer your pass is Monday, October 6th, 2025*
- You may transfer your pass to Breaking Bal 2026. The last day to transfer your pass is Monday, October 6th, 2025*
- You may request a refund. Refunds are considered on a case-by-case basis by emailing breakingbalboa@gmail.com and telling us about your situation. The deadline for refund requests is Friday, October 10th, 2025*
* If you become sick or another illness within 7 days of the event, please contact breakingbalboa@gmail.com to transfer your pass in order to protect the health and safety of others.
